Yes great memories Lato /Billy all though the docks in 1965 were very Dickensian.
This is the fella who was in our band (if you can call it a band ) he was a typical 1960's/70's comedian and sadly died a few years back.

Nice one Ted. My ex Mrs came from Tiller road and the Dorset Arms on Manchester Rd was my local for a few years. Celebrated our 1980 cup win in there after staggering back from Wembley.

Yes it was Lato I left in 1980 and the fruit boats stopped unloading there around 1977 I could be wrong but when I when I took the kids up there to show them where I worked I couldn't believe it the only things I recognised were some pubs and the swing bridges my old office at the Olsen depot had been sold to the Daily Telegraph.

The last time I worked at Canary Wharf Lato we were unloading banana's from Tenerife and apples from South Africa ;-)

A great set of photos obviously brings back great memories for those that used to work there.
I used to work at City Airport, can't imagine the place full of Ships instead of Aeroplanes

Just ignore the fecker Billy.
At one time a few of us played acoustic guitars and bashed out some tunes mainly Beatle stuff in the "Tooke" one of the lads was a funny fecker and went on to earn decent money as a comedian Al Benson.. shame the pub was millwall but where I worked was mainly claret & blue !

I've done a bit of work on the river front of Lenantons timber in the early 70s flood defence and often had to finish early because of the tide coming in.
Spent the rest of the day in the Blacksmiths Arms opposite.

Sounds like there were more than a few tricks pulled over the years. I know many birthday parties or events were well looked after with bottles straight off the boats…

It was a pleasure to meet your Grandad in the "Black Lion" V.
The PLA never geared up for the new container ships as they were becoming far to big for London most of our work went to felixstowe.. also a gang of dockers consisted of 8 men they got a bonus as in tonnage for everything they handled unloading/loading a container needed 2 men plus a clerk to load/unload the other 6 got paid for feck all work so it had to stop !

My grandad also worked at Fred Olsen. Until recently he would meet mates for a drink at the pub next door to the museum then make it his business to educate the visitors afterwards!
The museum is well worth a visit, I’ll be over to have a look at this exhibition, thanks for the heads up.
